At a traditional military school, military-style discipline is enforced in a highly structured environment which is neither therapeutic nor able to handle the needs of students with learning disabilities. A typical military school is a boarding school with some kind of military training.

Since there are no forms of therapy, children with behavioral or emotional issues don’t get the help they need and often fail at military school. Usually, military schools do not have the educational resources for students with learning disabilities such as ADD, ADHD, Non-Verbal Learning Disorders, and/or Asperger’s Syndrome.

Military-style boot camps are a shorter version of military boarding school. Through discipline and rigorous exercise and training, defiant teens are “broken” and returned home to their parents without any therapeutic intervention to deal with their underlying emotional or behavioral problems.

These short-term alternatives to military boarding schools are can be substitutes for juvenile jail or private programs for teens struggling with anger and defiance. Again, without any kind of therapy, the root of the teenager’s problem is never diagnosed nor dealt with and the child returns home – often returning to the same behaviors that landed him at boot camp in the first place.
