Goodwill Industries International is recognizing National Mentoring Month by promoting their GoodGuides program.
Goodwill GoodGuides are team of volunteers who serve as mentors for problem teens who have developmental disorders and behavioral issues. The program is funded by a $19.1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Justice, and the money is dispersed to 56 independent Goodwill agencies throughout the nation.
The overall mission of a GoodGuide is to help build self-esteem among adolescents who are at-risk for delinquency. The volunteers assist teens in preparing for future careers through various skill-building activities and support sessions.
They serve youth between ages 12 and 17 who are on the verge of dropping out of school or facing legal troubles. Many of the teens have had problems with substance abuse or gang membership. Individuals who would like to become a GoodGuide or who know of a teen who could benefit from a mentor can find information on GoodWill's website.
Adolescents who engage in delinquent behavior may benefit from boarding schools, which are designed to provide help for troubled teens.
