A health center in Indiana reports that students are putting their health at risk by taking substances to increase their productivity.
According to The Ball State Daily News, the center treats several students per day for caffeine-related problems. Many scholars are relying on coffee or energy drinks to get them through the day.
The director at the medical center said that too much caffeine can lead to an irregular heartbeat, headaches and sleep disturbance. He recommends that students avoid the substances after 6 p.m. to avoid sleep issues.
Jon Galvin told the news source that he started drinking a can of Amp or Monster energy drinks early in the day once he got into high school. Medical officials believe that many students condition their bodies to crave caffeine every day, and a can of soda is not enough for most.
One student admitted that he did not even like the taste of energy drinks, but he feels like he has to drink it to stay awake during class.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that the stimulating effects of caffeine in coffee, teas and chocolate can take as long as eight hours to wear off fully.
