Anti-bullying efforts are being made across the U.S., and Ohio is leading the movement.

The Buckeye State is planning and implementing programs that involve students, parents and community members. For example, The Percy Project is a statewide anti-bullying initiative that has had success among children of all ages.

As part of The Percy Project, an elementary school in Ohio recently launched a program that awards students whose behavior is consistent with the goals of peer respect and appreciation. A symbolic thermometer hangs in the school corridor and tracks the number of awards that are administered.

Students in middle and high schools in Ohio are developing their own anti-bullying programs. One group of teens is writing a book that will include stories of bullies and victims who found hope through their ordeals. The authors plan to visit various middle schools and share their positive message.

Activities that encourage students to participate in an initiative, rather than be talked to or lectured, can help produce better results. The U.S. Surgeon General said that pro-social education is the most effective solution to address youth violence.

Kids who bully their peers may benefit from alternative boot camps, which aim to instill more respectful and disciplined behavior among troubled teens.
