A Florida-based psychologist says that public temper tantrums among young children are normal, but the manner in which parents respond to the disruptive behavior may determine how frequently they reoccur.
According to ABC Action News, the doctor said there are four main reasons why kids throw a fit: they are hungry, thirsty, not stimulated or sleepy. She advises that parents make sure their kids are in safe and supportive environments, but it's also important not to give the inappropriate behavior too much attention or the child will think it is acceptable.
Although it is not always easy for a parent to retrain their frustration, the psychologist said that an animated negative reaction can worsen the situation. She said that children register positive reinforcement better than yelling or repetitive answers of "no" or "stop."
To avoid public temper tantrums, she said that it is wise to plan ahead by packing snacks and toys that help keep young kids entertained.
According to BabyCenter.com, a certified family educator says that young children frequently will throw fits for reassurance. However extreme the temper tantrum, the website says it is important for parents not to give into their demands just to quiet their child.
